It’s easy to let its president know you feel the decision to make a movie based on an American Girl character in Canada is wrong.

Dear Ms. Brothers:

I am writing to you to express my hurt and dismay that “Kit Kittredge:  An American Girl” was not filmed in the United States. 

How dare you market American Girl dolls to our daughters by telling them they can be anything they want to be when they grow up and then undermine the very message you use to sell your product to us by taking away our children’s opportunities?

Our supposed good neighbor Canada steals thousands of jobs and billions of dollars out of our economy every year by paying our American studios large sums of money to make movies and television shows in Canada with Canadian labor rather than in the United States with American labor.  This is wrong, and it also violates the international agreements that call for fair trade between nations.

Making a movie is a very labor-intensive process, with hundreds of people working behind the scenes for every face on the screen.  Kit’s story is about what happens when her father loses his job.  How many American mothers and fathers lost jobs when “Kit Kittredge:  An American Girl” was filmed in Canada?  How are they supposed to pay rent and buy food?

When they say they would like to help make an American Girl movie like “Kit Kittredge,” how are we supposed to tell our daughters or our sons they will never have the chance because American Girl movies are not made in America?  How do we explain to our children that America is not American enough for American Girls?

Kitt Kittredge is sadly now an un-American girl.  You should be deeply ashamed of the decision to make this movie in Canada.
